About a week after launch, the “Orion” capsule of NASA’s “Artemis 1” moon mission came very close to its goal. On the way to its orbit around the moon, the capsule flew past the moon at a distance of around 130 kilometers on Monday, the US space agency Nasa said. She will not get any closer to the moon during the rest of her flight.
During its flight, the capsule diligently sends video material and images to earth.

With the “Artemis” program, named after the Greek goddess of the moon, US astronauts are to land on the moon again in the coming years, including for the first time a woman and a non-white person.

“Orion” flies further than any spacecraft built for humans before it. The capsule is intended to stay in space longer than all of its predecessors without docking at a space station.

The “Orion” capsule is powered by the so-called European Service Module, ESM for short, built in Germany. The ESM, which weighs around 15 tons, contains the main engine and supplies the power for the spacecraft via four solar sails. It also regulates the capsule’s climate and temperature, and stores fuel, oxygen and water supplies for the future crew.

“Orion’s” return flight is also record-breaking: the spacecraft is said to return to earth faster and hotter than ever before. The target is a speed of almost 40,000 kilometers per hour and temperatures of up to 2800 degrees Celsius.

It is not yet known which astronauts will take part in the upcoming Artemis missions.
Always included in the live stream
The “Artemis 1” mission set out for a first test launch at the beginning of last week after months of postponement. The “Orion” capsule was launched from the Cape Canaveral cosmodrome in the US state of Florida with the “Space Launch System” rocket. In this live stream, the mission track all the time – albeit a little fuzzy.
