Because they are disruptive in a networked and synchronized world, no further leap seconds are to be added to world time from 2035 onwards. This was decided at the end of last year by a committee of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) based in Sèvres near Paris. Until now, the timekeepers had appended a second to the world time at irregular intervals, most recently on New Year’s Eve 2016, when after 11:59:59 p.m. it was not midnight but 11:59:60 p.m.
