Is Easter Monday a public holiday?
In Germany, Easter Monday is a public holiday throughout Germany and in almost all other European countries. Employees receive a holiday bonus for this day if they work.
The same also applies to Good Friday. What many do not know: The Easter Sunday is only a public holiday in Brandenburg, in all other federal states it is treated like an ordinary Sunday. There are also no public holidays Maundy Thursday and Easter or Holy Saturday in Germany.
What is celebrated on Easter Monday?
Easter Monday commemorates the story told in the Gospel of Luke, which says that on this day after the resurrection of Jesus, two disciples made their way to the town of Emmaus. There they met Jesus Christ that evening. The disciples then spread the news of Jesus’ resurrection in Jerusalem.
Are shops open on Easter Monday?
Since Easter Monday is a public holiday in all federal states in Germany, all shops are also closed. The Shop Protection Act in Germany stipulates that shops remain closed on public holidays in order to protect employees. However, bakeries, petrol stations or train station shops may be open on this day.
