Marc Elsberg landed a bestseller success ten years ago with his novel “Blackout”. It plunges Europe into chaos after a week-long power outage. Now the book is gaining new importance due to the energy crisis. in the Interview with the editorial network Germany the Austrian author criticizes that the European power grids are not sufficiently designed for safety due to cost reasons. “That would have to change,” says Elsberg. “But then, of course, electricity would also be more expensive.”
No reason to panic – but preparation
In the interview, Elsberg describes different scenarios that could endanger the power supply in Europe. In particular, the strong networking within the continent could “become a risk factor if even small regional disruptions can affect Europe”.

The author sees no reason to panic. However, he himself always has water and food available for a few days in order to be prepared for emergencies. In the event of a major incident, the power supply could be interrupted for two to four days. “And even if the power outage itself didn’t last that long, it would take a few days for everything else to work again, such as selling groceries in the supermarket,” says Elsberg.
