Ahead of the world climate conference in Egypt, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the fight for the most ambitious goals against global warming would fail. “The 1.5 degrees are in the intensive care unit and the machines are shaking. So you are in great danger,” Guterres said in New York on Thursday. He emphasized that reaching the Paris 1.5 degree target is still possible. But humanity is approaching a tipping point where the worst effects of the climate crisis will become irreversible.
The UN climate conference COP27 begins on Sunday in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. There, representatives from around 200 countries want to spend two weeks discussing, among other things, how global warming can be curbed.
