ADHD: In girls, it often goes undetected – that can be dangerous

AShe is thrown out of kindergarten because she is too wild and unconventional for the gender understanding of girls at the time. The girl simply has a mind of her own, parents and educators tell each other. In the 1970s, the clinical picture was still largely unknown, and that was only to change twenty years later. This is also due to the fact that ADHD is the most common mental illness in children and adolescents.

It is now known that ADHD is a neurobiological developmental disorder and not, as was once thought, the result of poor upbringing or too much temperament. Despite decades of research, diagnosis is a challenge.
